COMMUNICATION, LANGUAGE AND LITERACY

Speak and listen

Enjoy stories and books

Make marks e.g. scribble and drawing

Translate marks into early writing

Begin to recognise a few familiar words

This area of learning includes communicating, speaking and listening in different situations and for different purposes, being read to from a wide variety of books, reading simple texts and writing for a variety of purposes and audiences.

PROBLEM SOLVING, REASONING AND NUMERACY

To encourage children to …

Count and use numbers when playing

Find out about shapes and talk about sizes e.g. huge, tiny

Use maths language e.g. more apples, less apples

Compare things e.g. length, height

Know their daily routine e.g. get up, have breakfast, come to school, etc.

This area of learning includes counting,  sorting, matching, seeking patterns, making connections, recognising relationships and working with numbers, shapes, space and measures,

KNOWLEDGE  & UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD

Make sense of the world

Look at things around them

Learn about people and places

Use technology

Investigate and explore

In this area of learning children are developing the skills, knowledge and  understanding that will help them to make sense of the world. This forms the foundation for later work in science, history, geography, design and technology and ICT.

CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT

Use their imagination

Listen to different music

Sing, dance and be expressive

Explore colour

Create with textures and materials

The aspects covered in this area of learning include exploring and expressing thoughts and ideas through art, music and dance. The children are encouraged to be expressive in role play and when using their imagination whilst playing.

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

Enjoy exercise

Start to try to be healthy

Handle and use equipment safely

Improve co-ordination

Move confidently and with control

Physical development is all about improving skills of co-ordination, control, manipulation and movement. It involves fine and gross motor movement. It helps children gain  confidence in what they can do and enable them to feel the positive benefits of being healthy and active.
